    Recently, copies of the book, Bless Me, Ultima, was removed from a Colorado classroom by the principal based on parents’ complaints of bad language. The book also explores Hispanic cultural issues and non-traditional religious practices, and is on school reading lists across the country. The parents asked that the books be turned over to them. They were and the parents burned the books. How do you feel about situations like this? Do you think parents, teachers, principals, or students should get to decide what you read? What do you think about censorship vs. protection of young people?

    Recently, I had the opportunity to tour the present juvenile hall facility. It was very depressing – crowded, dreary, and old. About 1/3 of the youth were sleeping in stack-a-bed cots in dormitory hallways, because of the lack of space. Our tour guide told us that kids as young as 8 years old have been there. What do you think about the growing rate of youth violence? Do you see it at your school, in your neighborhoods? How do you stay out of the way of violence?

    Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast this week, reminding us that in the face of Mother Nature we are often helpless. Many people are now homeless, and some of us are grieving loved ones that lost their lives. If you feel like you’d like to express something to these people…we will compile your comments here and forward them to the teens of New Orleans through their young adult librarian.
