Kathleen's Picks
Deafening, by Frances Itani. Recommended by Kathleen on April 21, 2006.
My bookclub just finished reading this eloquent and powerful story which
draws interesting parallels between the experience of deafness with
that of serving in World War I as seen through the eyes of Grania, a
young deaf woman, and Jim, her hearing husband. Its juxtaposition of
sound and silence is fascinating and Itani's use of language paints
vivid pictures of her every room and trench her characters occupy.
Peace
Like a River, by Leif Enger. Recommended on 11/1/2005.
We read Peace Like a River (by Leif Enger) in my book club several
years ago. It’s still one of my all-time favorite reads and
I recommend it to others every chance I get. The story is a quiet
and observant narrative told by 11-year old Rueben Land as his family
journeys from Minnesota to the Badlands of North Dakota in search
of his older brother who is fleeing from the law. Enger brings each
character to life in a tale filled with cowboys, miracles, faith and
family – all woven together in a series of events that are both
fantastical, yet oddly believable as recounted by Rueben.
