Grand Canyon [DVD/VHS]
Recommended on 12/1/2005.
Whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie of all time is, I give
them this title. Directed by Lawrence Kasden of "The Big Chill",
Grand Canyon is one of those movies which looks at various questions
we find ourselves asking from time to time. It is the story of friends
created, love lost and found, the twists and turns of Life. Because Kevin
Kline chose to turn onto a different street and experienced an incident,
his life as he had known it became forever changed. The cast in this
movie is awesome and what I would call a perfect match of each person's
relationships and encounters with one another. Taking place in L.A., "Grand
Canyon" will stir your passion for living and, if you aren't
at that point yet, very well might do so. I think this is a film often
missed by people because the title suggests a documentary of the Grand
Canyon which it is not. The people you encounter in this film may touch
your heart, will certainly make you smile, get you thinking, and perhaps
even change the way you see things.
Flesh and blood,
by Michael Cunningham. Recommended on 12/1/2005.
One of the most moving books I have ever read, "Flesh and Blood" by
Michael Cunningham is one that I am actually reading again. I read this
novel 10 years ago and it has reminded me of its existence from time
to time. It's the story of a family and several generations of this family;
their trials and joys and their fortitude. Written by the author of "The
Hours", all I can do is suggest this novel to you and wish you well
on a very beautiful, though at times very graphic but real, journey of
prose which reads like poetry.
